Ptolemaeus, Alphonsus, Arzachel lunar craters and Rupes Recta fault on Jan. 01, 2023

Italiano:

English:
Here is one of the most striking lunar areas taken on the evening of January 1, 2023 in good seeing conditions, portraying the “trio” of craters Ptolemaeus, Alphonsus and Arzachel and, further down, two very beautiful and interesting details of the Moon: the “Rupes Recta ” and the “Rima Birt”.

For reasons of time, I will focus only on the Rupes Recta, a beautiful lunar detail visible after the first quarter phase, when the solar illumination grazes the lunar surface consisting of a beautiful 114 km long fault and 2 to 3 kilometers wide, with an average depth of about 300 meters.

The Rupes recta, (which translated from Latin means “Straight Escarpment”), or also known as straight wall, with professional instruments is possible to appreciate it in its real path, which is not perfectly straight but interrupted by some “slopes” that join the upper part to the lower one.
